          What this video covers: Learn how to recognize and manage malnutrition in children during disasters and resource-constrained settings. The video focuses on assessing food security, identifying vulnerable pediatric populations, classifying acute malnutrition, and applying strategies to prevent and treat micronutrient deficiencies.

          Why it matters: Disasters can disrupt food access, healthcare services, sanitation, and family support systems, placing children at increased risk for malnutrition and related complications. Nutritional status directly affects children’s vulnerability to infection, recovery from illness or injury, wound healing, and overall survival during the emergency and recovery phases.

          Step into interactive global child health scenarios focused on the recognition and management of malnutrition in children during disaster and resource-limited settings. This activity challenges learners to identify signs of acute malnutrition assess clinical risk, and make practical care decisions when food insecurity, disrupted health systems, infection risk, and limited supplies may affect pediatric outcomes.

          Through realistic decision points, learners take an active role in evaluating children for nutritional status, recognizing warning signs of severe illness, prioritizing treatment, and adapting management plans to the resources available. The scenarios emphasize the unique vulnerabilities of children following disasters and humanitarian emergencies, including increased risk for wasting, micronutrient deficiencies, dehydration, infection, delayed growth, and clinical deterioration.

          In this problem-based learning exercise, available in both English and Spanish, you will learn:

          • Recognition of malnutrition and nutrition-related danger signs in children
          • Assessment of acute malnutrition in disaster and resource-limited settings
          • Identification of children at increased risk for clinical deterioration
          • Prioritization of care when food, medications, staffing, or referral options are limited
          • Use of practical, context-appropriate nutrition and treatment strategies
          • Communication with caregivers and interprofessional team members
          • Application of global child health principles to the recognition and management of pediatric malnutrition in crisis settings
