          What this video covers: Learn how to recognize, assess, and manage common pediatric infections after a disaster using the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness, or IMCI, approach. The video focuses on infection risks in crisis settings, clinical decision-making for acute infections, and strategies for prevention, surveillance, and outbreak response.

          Why it matters: Disasters can increase the spread and severity of childhood infections because of crowding, displacement, poor sanitation, unsafe water, interrupted immunization, and disrupted access to routine healthcare. Early recognition, appropriate treatment, and prevention strategies help reduce avoidable illness and death among children during humanitarian emergencies.

          Step into an interactive global child health scenario focused on managing common pediatric infections in the aftermath of a disaster. This exercise challenges learners to apply clinical reasoning, prioritize treatment, and adapt care when children are at increased risk for infection due to disrupted health systems, crowded living conditions, limited resources, and reduced access to routine care.

          Through realistic decision points, learners take an active role in assessing pediatric patients, recognizing signs of infection and clinical deterioration, and selecting practical management strategies in a disaster-affected setting. The scenarios emphasize the unique vulnerabilities of children following emergencies, including risks related to dehydration, malnutrition, incomplete immunization, poor sanitation, and delayed access to medical treatment.

          In this problem-based case scenario, available in both English and Spanish, you will learn:

          • Rapid assessment of pediatric patients with suspected infection
          • Recognition of danger signs and clinical deterioration in children
          • Management of prevalent childhood infections following a disaster
          • Prioritization of care when diagnostics, medications, or referral options are limited
          • Communication with caregivers and interprofessional team members
          • Application of global child health principles to infection management in crisis and resource-limited settings
