About the content
In this activity, you will assume the role of a pediatric provider whose clinic has closed due to severe flooding. From home, you must review the list of patients scheduled for the afternoon and determine which families require immediate provider outreach and which can be safely managed by nursing triage. After prioritizing your calls, you will respond to real-time concerns from families of children with a range of medical and behavioral needs. This scenario highlights the challenges of delivering safe, effective care when access to clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals may be limited during a disaster.
What You Will Learn
- Prioritize outpatient pediatric patients during a disaster when clinical resources and access to care are disrupted.
- Apply disaster-informed clinical decision making to address urgent medical, behavioral, and supply-related concerns by phone or telehealth.
- Identify safe alternatives to in-person care while ensuring high-risk patients receive timely guidance and escalation of care when needed.
