About the content
Pediatric trauma patients present unique assessment and treatment challenges in the prehospital setting. Early recognition of serious injury, timely intervention, and appropriate transport decisions can significantly impact patient outcomes. However, differences in pediatric physiology and the relative infrequency of critical pediatric trauma cases can make assessment and decision-making difficult for even experienced providers.
This activity provides evidence-based approaches to pediatric trauma assessment, shock recognition, management, and triage. Through practical, case-based scenarios, learners will explore structured assessment tools, identify early signs of clinical deterioration, and apply current trauma system principles to support effective care and transport decisions.
Whether you are an EMS clinician, physician, or other healthcare professional involved in emergency pediatric care, this activity will help strengthen your confidence and ability to rapidly recognize and manage pediatric trauma patients in real-world situations.
What You Will Learn
- Apply the Pediatric Assessment Triangle and trauma-specific ABCDE survey to guide rapid, structured pediatric trauma evaluation.
- Implement evidence-based pediatric trauma management strategies to address common causes of morbidity and mortality.
- Describe the role of regionalized trauma systems in guiding EMS transport to the most appropriate care.
