Pediatric Disaster Medicine: Pediatric Surge Capacity and Capability

Pediatric surge events can overwhelm healthcare systems quickly, whether caused by a sudden mass casualty incident or a prolonged seasonal increase in critically ill children. In this module, you will explore how pediatric providers, hospitals, clinics, and community partners work together to manage overwhelming patient volumes while maintaining safe, effective care for children. Through real-world surge scenarios, interactive activities, and practical examples, you will learn how healthcare systems expand pediatric surge capacity and capability, coordinate resources across facilities, and support children during all phases of the disaster cycle. Enroll in this module to strengthen your understanding of pediatric surge management and improve preparedness for future disaster and public health emergencies.

What You Will Learn

  • Recognize core concepts of healthcare surge, including surge capacity and capability.
  • Describe the differences in pediatric clinical considerations for a no-notice mass casualty surge versus a persistent seasonal surge.
  • Review surge strategies that can be used in hospital and clinic settings through all four phases of the disaster cycle, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Locate and review available surge management resources to improve the care of children in the next surge event.
