Pediatric Disaster Medicine: Children and Youth with Special Healthcare Needs and Disasters Activities

In these disaster activities focused on children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and children with medical complexity (CMC), you will navigate both inpatient and outpatient care challenges during a severe weather event. As a major storm approaches, you will participate in inpatient rounds to determine which hospitalized children can be safely discharged versus those who must remain, balancing clinical stability, home supports, and continuity of care. Simultaneously, you will assume the role of an outpatient provider managing a closed clinic due to flooding, prioritizing patient outreach and addressing urgent medical, behavioral, and supply concerns via phone or telehealth.

What You Will Learn

  • Evaluate and prioritize CYSHCN and CMC patients across inpatient and outpatient settings during a disaster

  • Apply disaster-informed clinical decision making, incorporating clinical status, home resources, and access to care

  • Ensure patient safety and continuity of care while managing limited resources and disrupted healthcare systems
